I watch my lady sleep.

She likes to sleep even more than I do. Usually, she sleeps quietly.

She curls on her side.

She lies on her back.

Sometimes she hugs a pillow, sometimes me.

But this morning she snuffles and rolls around like an unsettled puppy.

Her friends, my friends, are visiting. I hear the familiar rumble of their cars, and as they near the house I can smell them through a crack in the window. They smell like sugar and butter and flour and love.

Should I wake her?

She likes visits from her friends, but she likes sleeping, too.

I watch her as the knocking begins.

She pulls a pillow over her head and pretends she can’t hear it, but it’s very loud.
